Norwegian Business Centre set up in Kampala

On July 22nd 2010, the Norwegian Embassy in Kampala was invited to the Launch of a maize milling machine in Amuru District, Northern Uganda, belonging to the Amuru Ribbe Ber Integrated Farmers Association. The launch was marked by dancing, singing and quite a few speeches as is the case in many parts of Uganda when marking a significant event in a community.

Norway condemns terrorist actions in Uganda

Norway condemns the terrorist actions in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, where at least 74 innocent people were killed and many others injured on Sunday evening. Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre commented: “We strongly condemn such terrorist actions.”

Bombeattentat i Kampala

Søndag 11. Juni ble to utesteder i Kampala utsatt for bombeattentat i forbindelse med at folk var samlet for å se finalen i fotball-VM. Det fryktes at flere enn 50 mennesker er omkommet og mange er såret. Ambassaden er i kontakt med nordmenn som befinner seg i Kampala. Så langt er det ingen ting som tyder på at nordmenn er blant de skadde eller omkomne.

Politisk uro i Burundi

I forbindelse med den pågående valgprosessen i Burundi har det vært episoder med granatangrep i Bujumbura og politisk motiverte branner andre steder i landet. Ambassadeseksjonen anbefaler alle besøkende til Burundi å utvise aktsomhet og ikke bevege seg utendørs etter mørkets frambrudd med mindre det er strengt nødvendig.

Disturbances in Kampala

The Bugandan Royal burial site, Kasubi Tombs, has burnt. The origin of the fire has not been established, and there is a possibility of riots in some parts of Kampala. All Norwegian citizens in Kampala are advised to take precautions, and avoid the areas around Kasubi, Makerere, Mengo, Nakulabye and Hoima Road. Bugandas kongelige gravsted, Kasubi Tombs, er brent ned. Årsaken er foreløpig ukjent men hendelsen har skapt reaksjoner, og det er muligheter for uro i deler av byen. Alle besøkende og fastboende nordmenn i Kampala bes utvise stor aktsomhet og unngå områdene rundt Kasubi, Makerere, Mengo, Nakulabye og Hoima Road. Alle bes holde seg orientert via radio, TV og Internet.

Mandag ettermiddag ble tre landsbyer i Bududa distriktet, ikke langt fra Mbale rammet av jordras. Rundt 80 personer er bekreftet omkommet og 400 er savnet. Så vidt ambassaden er kjent med er ingen nordmenn rammet. Ambassaden har vært i kontakt med de nordmenn som er registrert bosatt i området.

Nairobi, 15 February 2010: The UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund will this year provide one million dollars to projects led by young people aged 15-32 years who are piloting innovative approaches to employment, good governance, shelter and secure tenure. Small development initiatives are eligible for grants of up to $5,000, while larger projects may be able to secure up to $25,000.

Professor Endre Lillethun awarded Honorary Doctorate at Makerere University

Norwegian professor Endre Lillethun was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science at the Makerere University graduation ceremony on Monday the 18th of January. Professor Lillethun is a professor at the University of Bergen where he teaches physics, he has over 130 scientific publications.
