David Kato was a courageous and dedicated defender of human rights, and the Norwegian embassy was deeply shocked and troubled to learn of his violent death. We strongly condemn his murder and call on the Ugandan authorities to ensure that the murder is urgently and impartially investigated. Those responsible for his murder must be brought to justice.
David Kato’s message was clear and important: Human rights are for all Ugandans, including sexual minorities. The Norwegian embassy adds its voice to his and calls on the Ugandan Government, Civil Society and Local Communities to protect sexual minorities across Uganda. Violence and threats cannot be tolerated.
We reiterate that the United Nations General Secretary encourages all states to decriminalize homosexuality. Laws that criminalize people on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity help to legitimize homophobia and contribute to a climate of hate.
David Kato’s death is a great loss to the Ugandan community and the global community of human rights defenders and LGBTI activists.
